2018 Quilt Studio Tour & Luncheon

“Under the Big Top”

Our October 20, 2018 event “Under the Big Top” was a wonderful success!
A huge thank you to everyone for the hard work, energy, and positive attitudes it took to make this adventure such a fun and rewarding day.  We had 180 attendees, over 90% of whom said they would love to come again.  Congratulations to everyone who helped make this happen.

Hats off to our Homeowners/Hostesses: Hester Bell, Sherryl Zurek, Lisa Burroughs, Leanne Compean, and Kathi Wilson. They did a beautiful job of opening their lovely homes, hanging the Viewer’s Choice quilts, serving refreshments, and smiling thru what must have been a year’s worth of work.

Donations were received from, among others, Sewing Machine Warehouse, Quilt n Things, Dave Make it Sew and Paper Pieces.

We are so grateful for the enthusiastic participation by the planning team, the helpers on site, and the participants.   We have said many times, “It took a village (and two village idiots!)”.

Quilters’ Home Studio & Garden Tour Information
tIt has been almost fifty years since Hester and her family moved into this 1926 Mediterranean style home in a friendly Altadena neighborhood.  Over the years a chicken coop was added, the vegetable garden has flourished, and the front yard has been planted with California natives.  In 2007, a tiny converted garage was upgraded to a comfortable, light filled guesthouse/quilt studio.  Hester loves looking up from sewing into the beautiful vegetable garden just outside her window.  The patio will display members’ “Outside the Block” quilts that reflect personal vision and experimentation.

Leanne’s’ cozy 1956 mid-century modern home is a good example of what can be done with a small space.  The home is nestled in the Seven Hills area of Tujunga and has a large backyard patio surrounded by drought tolerant landscaping.  Quilts will be displayed on the Patio and around the back yard.  Inside will also be a display of Leanne's quilts and handy work along with other Guild members’ appliqué quilts.  Don't miss the hallway that her husband has turned into a gallery to display her award winning quilts.

Tour a 1911 Craftsman-Bungalow lovingly restored by Kathi and her husband. View quilts and antiques throughout their Sierra Madre home, visit the sunroom/studio and stop in the backyard patio & pond area where the quilts displayed will feature guild members’ interpretation of the theme “Fall”.

Lisa’s 1954 home in Sunland was updated after the last of the 4 children left in 2012. A quilt studio has replaced the front bedroom where a 9-foot closet now is storage for some of the fabric and extras. A very handy husband built the floor to ceiling doors for the closet and added displays for the quilts throughout the house. You can also enjoy the peacocks that roam the area.

Sherryl’s Tri-level home sits on the edge of Big Tujunga Wash, making it feel like you’ve left civilization and entered the “wilds” of the beautiful San Gabriels.  Keep going and find your way to Sherryl’s house, filled with quilts and themed “Christmas/Winter”.  Her airy studio, a converted children’s clubhouse, features a large collection of fabrics in glass front shelving.
