This IDEA workshop explores how embellishments can make an ordinary project extraordinary!
Students will make a beaded sampler as they learn fundamental beading techniques:
the basic stitch, straight and curve line beading, scatter stitching, and the
lazy stitch. We’ll also learn to attach charms, buttons, trinkets, & unusual
objects. Eliminate sagging beads and untidy looking threads. Mary also demonstrates
her 3-D techniques. We’ll review flip charts of how to’s, examine
finished work, & view inspirational slides. Questions are encouraged. This
class features live video projection, every student has a front row seat!

Supply List:
• An 8” or 10” embroidery hoop, fitted with muslin or
an 11” PVC quilting frame if you already own one.
• 1 quilting “between” needle, the thinnest you can thread.
• Small sharp scissors or thread clips
• Small shallow non-plastic dish for beads
• Pencil & paper for notes
• Optional - a current project that you’d like to embellish
• Optional: a size 10 or 11 appliqué needle
• Kit: beads, embellishment items, & beading thread
• Instructor will have her books, some PVC frames, and additional beads
for purchase.

Mary
has updated the mid-19th century penny-rug style
of embroidered wool appliqué with
a new look. Discover the visual warmth of wool, the
appeal of embroidery, the charm of buttons, and the
pizzazz of beads through the comprehensive visual discussion covering
numerous construction approaches and edging treatments. Students learn “bead
appliqué” as they collage a traditional, folk art, or
contemporary quilt using the less costly, readily available,
wool blend felt (or felted 100% wool). Work by hand, machine,
or a combination... it’s your choice. Recreate one of Mary’s
samples or let her help you design your own.

Supply List:
• Wool blend felt or felted 100% wool: 2 different colored 18” squares
for main body of rug; a variety of 10” squares in other colors.
For mock sashing strips, a piece about 20” x 8”.
• 50-100 buttons: recommend white, ivory, oyster shell, or pearlized. Button
sizes or numbers of holes do not need to be consistent.
• Small seed beads to match buttons.
• Paper backed fusible adhesive such as Wonder-Under, a Teflon press sheet
or fabric press cloth.
• Lightweight tear-away stabilizer such as Sulky Tear-Easy or OESD Light
Weight Tear-Away Embroidery Stabilizer.
• Freezer paper - for templates and layout/design planning.
• White thread or glue stick for basting.
• Nymo beading thread - white, black, or neutral gray.
• Aurifil 12 wt. wool-blend thread (requires size 16 topstitching needle
for machine work) or 1 skein (about 7 yards) black DMC, 6 ply embroidery floss.
• Hand sewing needles: basting, embroidery (eye to accommodate 3 strands
of floss or Aurifil).
• 1 quilting “between” needle, the thinnest you can thread.
• Straight pins
• Fabric scissors for detail cutting
• Shallow non-plastic dish for beads
• Pencil for tracing & a removal marking tool (to mark the wool)
• BCT, size L with paper scissors
• Optional: small and slightly larger (size 6) seed beads of colors to coordinate
or contrast your fabrics.
• Optional: wave blade rotary cutter
• Optional: sewing machine with open-toe embroidery foot (eliminate floss & embroidery
needle.) Black sewing thread and black machine embroidery thread.

learn the anatomy of the stitch, the WHY and HOW of every movement.

Learn creative edging techniques to decorate quilt bindings, borders, blocks,
or outline appliqué motifs with beads!! Students make two reference samplers
of innovative and easy techniques as they explore the possibilities. These bead
accents will provide a gently framed or highly dramatic effect to quilts of all
construction styles. The techniques can also be applied as a decorative border
or edging on curtains, tablecloths, napkins, bed linens, or pillows. Once you
recognize the fabulous impact
these methods achieve, your existing and in-progress projects will surely tempt
you! This class features live video projection, every student has a front row
seat. Kit fee required $10.00 (contains the beads & beading thread)

• 1 mock quilt, 17” x 6”. Bind using the double fold
method, mitered corners, hand sewn to the back with a binding width about ¼”.
Machine quilt minimally to hold the layers together A solid, light-colored
fabric or muslin for quilt and binding will be easiest to work with.
• 1 quilting “between” needle, the thinnest you can thread.
• Size 11 or 12 appliqué needle (Sharps or Straw Needles).
• Small sharp scissors or thread clips.
• Small shallow non-plastic dish, plate, or saucer for the beads.
• Small ruler - 1” x 6” size is sufficient
