SK1 • Reverse and Cutwork Appliqué Techniques
$40.00
Thursday, 3/15/07
3 hours          6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
All levels • No machine

Channel appliqué, and reverse and direct cutwork appliqué are wonderful primary or secondary technical elements in quilts, are simple to derive, relate especially well to freely drawn or improvisational designs and travel extremely well. Emphasis in class is more on design and preparation for stitching (marking, basting, and cutting) than on the actual appliqué stitch.

Supply List:

• BSS
• Paper, like an old spiral notebook, or plain newsprint.
• Thread to match your top and contrasting thread for basting.
• “Straw” needles (milliners) for hand appliqué.
• Sequin pins ½” long are nice, if you already have them.
• A removable or permanent marking pen or pencil of your choice, which can be seen on your front square fabric.
• Several 8” squares of contrasting fabrics.

SK2 • Happy Rickrack Quilt
$70.00
Friday, 3/16/07
6 hours          8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
All levels • Machine required

In class we will cover the basics of some rather unusual paper foundation piecing, learn an unconventional raw-edge treatment, do some sewing, talk about color and fabric selection, and have a great time! Most people complete a block or two in class.

Supply List:

• Pattern for The Happy Rickrack Quilt optional; instructions and paper foundations for use in class will be provided.
• Sewing machine with a reliable satin stitch.
• BSS; BCT and scissors for cutting paper.
• Baby rickrack in colors that coordinate or contrast with your fabrics. Each block requires about one yard.
• Invisible thread, preferably one that can be ironed over.

• Re-stickable adhesive glue stick (by Scotch or Post-it).
• Scotch “magic” tape (colors are nice, if you can find them).

Fabric Notes
• The fabrics in the instructor’s quilt are active, medium-scale prints, reminiscent of the 1930’s and the 1960’s.
• Points and backgrounds are conveniently worked using strips about 4” wide. Backgrounds require a minimum of ⅛ yard.
• Any color combination or character is fine. The key is contrast, especially between the “points” and their background, but also with the rickrack and the center. More fabric is more fun!
