Free Expression Buffet
Learn Robbi's innovative techniques to create sophisticated
art quilts as described in her book Free Expressions. In
this fun and relaxing class, each student will pick one from Robbi's current
pattern selection from ALL of her fused workshops to complete one 18" x 24" top!
Fused bindings will be demonstrated, free motion quilting
and dyeing techniques will be discussed.
Materials List: $5 pattern fee payable to instructor. Mechanical
pencil, paper cutting scissors, 4" or similar size scissors to cut detailed
shapes out of fabric bonded to webbing. Glass head quilt pins. 2 yards paper
backed fusible webbing (an example: regular weight Wonder Under). Fat quarters
or large scraps of cotton hand dyes or brightly colored prints. Bring two
values of each color: yellow, orange, red, purple, blue and green to have a
varied palette. Also include a few neutrals for backgrounds.

Expressive Unmarked Free Motion Quilting
Robbi Joy Eklow, the author of Free Expression: The Art and

techniques to fill your quilts with lavish designs. It's fun and easy.
We'll be practicing on inexpensive felt rectangles in the morning, switching
to muslin sandwiches in the afternoon.
Materials List: Twenty precut 9" x 12" felt rectangles,
any color. Two 18" x 18" practice quilt sandwiches, muslin for bread,
cotton or wool batting for the "meat." Don't Baste! 40 weight machine
embroidery thread, either polyester, cotton or rayon - one spool solid color,
one spool variegated. Tools - SEWING MACHINE IN GOOD WORKING ORDER and with
which you are FAMILIAR. It is assumed you will know how to set up your machine
for darning. Sewing machine MANUAL. Free motion or darning foot for your machine.
Extension cord Schmetz machine needles - size 75, 80 or 90, scissors to clip
threads, tweezers to remove thread if necessary, small paint brush to clean
lint out of machine, pen and paper to take notes and practice drawing quilt
patterns; I highly recommend glasses to protect your eyes in case you break
a needle and it flies. Robbi had a two part article covering her techniques

Making Faces and More - (2 Day workshop)
This class combines photo-realistic images with abstract
backgrounds to create a unique look to your quilt. Day 1 focuses
on the human face, but the skills learned in the class can be used on
other subjects like animals or flowers. Simple line drawings are made
using photographs each student brings with them. To transform that drawing
from just a line drawing into a realistic life like image, fusible web
is used with an assortment of fabrics. Shading, blending and highlighting
are some of the techniques demonstrated in this workshop. Day 2 is about
learning how to draw unique abstract backgrounds for your quilt. Those
drawings are transformed to fabric using machine or fusible appliqué and
then combined with the face for a one of a kind portrait.

From Doodle to Textile Art
In this class students learn how to create interesting curved abstract pieces
from their own drawings on 12” x 18” sketch paper. Then turn those
drawings into beautiful machine appliquéd textile art measuring the
same size. No drawing skill is necessary, just a willingness to learn and explore
the possibilities. Some sewing skill is needed and a sewing machine with a
zigzag stitch is required.

Sharon Schamber's Aunt Joe taught her to sew when she was six years
old. She learned about design and manufacture of Bridal and Pageant wear
and started her own company when she was 19 years old. Her first competition
quilt was made entirely by hand and won the Jinny Beyer Borders on Brilliance
contest in Houston in 1999. Sharon feels that she is first of all a teacher
and then an artist and quilts are the medium that she has chosen..

Piec-lique Double Wedding Ring
Sharon’s will show you how to sew perfect curved seams with her Piec liqué technique.
This method provides the speed and control to make curved piecing fun. There
are four different applications of the technique: layered for gently curved seams,
inset for enclosed shapes, combined for seams interrupted by other elements,
and free-form for spontaneous piecing without templates. This class is fun and
easy. No stress!
Materials List: $10.00 Pattern and handout charge (Handout is
on a CD, bring Lap Top Computer if available.) Sewing machine (You won’t
need your sewing machine until in the afternoon.) Quarter inch piecing foot.
A single needle plate for your sewing machine. Size 75 machine embroidery needles.

Machine Quilting - Filling in the Space
Sharon will show you her awarding machine quilting style. This class will teach
you how to you’re your quilt spaces with four basic shapes. All this
without having to mark your top! *You will need to make block and bring it
to class with a back.

Machine Appliqué – Cotton

Then you’ll love this streamlined approach for achieving outstanding
results with inventive machine appliqué techniques. Sharon will take
you through her creative machine appliqué method with detail. Her
turned-edge and raw-edge technique provides a hand-done look.
Materials
List: $7 pattern and handout charge. 1-22” piece of 100%
cotton in a light color for the background, 12” square of purple,
yellow and blue for the blooms, Get a fabric that has modeled
color for petals. 2-12” squares of greens for the
stems and leaves, 12” square of butterfly fabric. (A scrap of black
for body.) 1 fat quarter of mauve for the ribbon, 1 yard
of appliqué stabilizer,
(Vileen Tear-n-Wash) Sulky polyester mono filament thread, 1 spool
of Mettler cotton embroidery thread 50/3 to match the background,

Norah McMeeking
Norah Madigan McMeeking worked as a graphic designer for
book and magazine publishers before moving to Santa Barbara, California,
where she now teaches adult education classes in quiltmaking. As the granddaughter
of two seamstresses, a sign painter, and a printer, she believes her interest
in patchwork is genetic, combining sewing and graphics. Her pictorial
quilts have been exhibited at AQS, The Road to California, Quilts U.K.,
The National Patchwork Championships, and Pacific International Quilt
Festival. They have also been published in books by Katie Pasquini-Masopust,
Jean Ray Laury, and Robert Shaw.

Venice Rose- St. Mark's Wall Hanging (2
Day workshop)
This workshop will show you how easy it is to make this stunning quilt! Day 1
covers the many design options for this pattern, preparation for foundation piecing
and foundation piecing. Day 2 covers curved seam piecing, assembly, and machine
appliqué. Each quarter of the quilt takes about a day to assemble. The
appliqué and final assembly take about two days more and you have a really

Landscape Quilts:Design and Technique
Long established principles of painting can be applied to quiltmaking to
produce a great variety of landscapes. Without resorting to creating our own
fabric (though this is fun!), value, color, print scale, texture, contrast,
and line quality can all be brought into play to design a realistic quilt.
Techniques such as colorwash, bargello, foundation piecing, invisible blind-hem
machine appliqué, and curved-seam piecing are very adaptable for landscapes
and other pictorial quilts. Embellishment and surface techniques such as embroidery,
stenciling, and drawing can be used for special effects or to add small detail.
Composition, perspective, and emphasis "speak" to the view and give
heart to the quiltmaker's vision. My design class touches on all these topics
in as much detail as the length of the workshop allows. I've developed worksheets
that cover these topics and become a permanent reference for each student.
Some classes include "visual exercises" (eyes, not hands) to sharpen
observations and improve attention to landscape details.

Deb Karasik
Deb Karasik dabbled in quilting when her children were born
BRC (Before Rotary Cutters). But then she put down her scissors and cardboard
templates and took up the task of raising her children and launching a
career in the interior design industry. Her youngest daughter's announcement
in 2000 that she was pregnant with triplets was all the incentive Deb
needed to try quilting once again.She ventured off to her local quilt
shop and was introduced to the rotary cutter. With the discovery of this
amazing tool, and all the luscious fabrics that were available for quilters,
her new passion was born.In these few short years of working in and honing
this art form, Deb has designed and made numerous original
quilts.

Beginning Spikers
In these workshops we will teach students how to
get past the fear of sewing curves & sharp points. During the workshop,
we go through the basics of choosing colors and
fabrics that work well together and of course our easy paper piecing
technique, ensuring a gorgeous quilt. Working one on one as much as possible
throughout the class, we show each student the art of making perfect
points and graceful, smooth curves. These classes do come with one warning
though. 'spikey' quilts can be very addictive! So...be prepared to laugh
a lot, have fun with your fabrics and embrace the fun of making our not
so basic NY Beauty quilts!

Silk Painting and Appliqué as a Background
for Art Quilting

Wearable Art to the Max
In the morning you will “double dye” 1 ½ yards of silk and
satin burnout fabric in the microwave. It is a wonderful process with amazing
results. In the afternoon you will fashion the fabric you just dyed into
a romantic float jacket with silken thread tassels. So easy you can wear it that
night.
Materials List; Kit fee $30 Rubber gloves, apron,
1 quart size microwave safe plastic container to dye in, old towel to dry and
iron dyed fabric on. Sewing machine, bring 3 spools of your favorite color thread
one of them will go with what you dye. Scissors, Dye in the morning and
sew in the afternoon. The Kit includes, fabric, dye, 2 tassels, beads,

‘Lillith’ – an 18” seated
Fairy (2
Day workshop)
This is a wonderful winged fairy with a soft sculpted face and darling fairy
ears. A simple wired hand and a wimsical costume will delight and entertain you
all while you are learinga all the cloth doll basics. Template method sewing,
stuffing techniques, advanced facial development including eyes, lips, cheeks
and facial coloration. Learn simple free motion emproidery wings to attach for
her maiden flight and some simple beading.
Materials List; Kit Fee $38.00
Open toe appliqué foot for your machine. Tacky glue and Fabri Tac glue,
Fray Check. Purple fade away marker, Mechanical pencil, Fiber fill (I prefer
Soft Touch Supreme by Fairfield), Mini and Regular Stuffing Forks, Straight nose
hemostats. 1/3 yard brown dupioni silk for petals and pantalets. Small piece
of pink silk for pink petals at her side waist, ¾ yard piece of a wide
brown ribbon for her upper bodice and sleeve. 1 yard moss green tulle for embellishment
and underskirt. Moss green silk dupioni for her legs. 1 yard of 3-4”lace
for peplum (I hand dyed mine). Various lengths of ribbon and trim to create the
flowers for her waist, ties for her pantaloons, chest trim etc. Beads for trimming
around petals (I used aurora borealis seed beads) and some small green glass
bead leaves for the lace peplum edges. Two small 2 hole buttons to joint shoulders.
Heavy nylon upholstery thread. Off white polyester or cotton wrapped polyester
thread. 5” or 7” needle to joint shoulders. John James long darners
number 7 for soft sculpting the face. Fibers for her wings to free motion-mohair,
wool fibers, silk ribbons, rayon yarns mohair, roving, Angelina, tulle, cording,
threads to match etc. Small pieces of soft ,thin leather or ultra-suede in 2
or 3 colors for shoes. Sakura Micron Pigma pens in Black and Brown in 005 tip
(not 05). White gel pen Pastel blue or green gel pen. 2 lip color colored pencils
and a dark gray or brown. Short Liner brush (000) is good.
General Information and getting started.
This is a soft sculpted face cloth doll. If you have never done any soft sculpting
before then you need to let yourself experience a learning curve. This is a natural
and desirable course of events to learn anything new. So don’t be timid
and enjoy the process and the things you learn along the way. Remember you are
here to learn the process and that needs to be the focus of your fun. The end
result will change and improve as you develop your skills. I have chosen very
specific fabrics because they have the qualities I like. The silk dupioni for
her petals and pantaloons will give you richness in color and a fullness that
is desirable. The silk organza I chose for the skirt will poof out just right
and the edges will burn to create a seal. The Internet is a fabulous tool for
sourcing fabrics and loads of other stuff.
So if you do not have local sources for some of the things I have used then get
onto GOOGLE and have some fun and find the things you need and of course things
you don’t need!

Blair
Artist Patt Blair has been involved in some form of visual or written
creative expression since her mid teens using oils, brush and pen lettering,
and in the 70s, discovered the joy and spontaneity of watercolors. By
the mid 90s, she began weekend morning walks in the park with friends
who were quilters. After a year or so of not knowing what the heck they
were talking about, she decided to learn a bit about this quilting thing.
In 2003, she began competing and placing in local and nationally judged
contests.
