Wendy Butler Berns

Fabric and sewing have been a part of Wendy’s life for 43 years, ever since fourth grade 4-H. Wendy’s quilts are noted for their bold use of color, unusual fabrics, and a combination of unconventional techniques. Dale Fleming
Walnut Creek, California

I love quilting. The spectrum of texture, drape, and color of fabric allow limitless creativity in any project. Equally important to me is the sense of community and generosity that happens when women come together to share skills while quilting. Whether the quilter is a novice or is accomplished, traditional or contemporary, it doesn’t matter. Using the methods I have developed people can expand their skills as they explore many new possibilities. My goal is not to have students create quilts just like mine, but instead, to give the tools that allow them to simplify difficult tasks and create what is in their hearts. Rita Hutchens
Sandpoint, Idaho

In my life and in my creativeness I have a desire to be distinctive. With that desire comes the willingness to take risks and with that willingness comes the ability to accept mistakes. The best ideas and concepts are often developed through mistakes, which I think of as intuitive decisions. Working intuitively with lots of experimentation and mistakes I discovered a style and process of working and developed a unique method of strip piecing. I have explored this technique in depth designing and producing innovative contemporary quilts and award winning garments. I am enthusiastic about sharing this template and paper free technique. Sharon Pederson
Comox Valley, on Vancouver Island, Canada

I love to teach. To spend time with students who are full of enthusiasm and are anxious to learn is a very rewarding experience. I also like to have fun, so my classes tend to be full of laughs, but also lots of information. My theory is you'll learn faster if you are enjoying yourself. And besides, isn't this supposed to be a fun activity? More about Sharon Pederson...

GQG Teacher

Christine Shively
Ozawkie, KS

Exploring the possibilities of creating a character with fabric is an extension of a lifetime fascination with three-dimensional forms. My characters emerge from the familiar tales of childhood and from stories of the heart and soul. Doll making is a true story telling art form. Fabric, color, texture and patter n all play intricate parts in creating interesting figures that tell their own stories to the viewers who meet them. More about Christine Shively...

GQG Teacher

Karen K. Stone
Dallas, TX

What makes Karen K. Stone’s quilts so compelling is their color and complexity. There are a variety of influences – southwestern/Mexican primarily, but also appliqué motifs – which interplay with complex traditional quilt designs such as the New York beauty and the Lone Star, to make something entirely original. What’s more, Karen’s fabric imagination is uncanny in its ability to mix very traditional calico-type prints and paisleys with bolder plain and large-print fabrics to make a unique blend. Despite a very large fabric palette, the last word you would ever apply to them is “scrappy.” More about Karen K. Stone ...

GQG teacher   Zena Thorpe
California

I was born in England and came to this country 39 years ago. I have 4 children and 3 grandchildren. I was a scientist in a past life and it has been suggested to me that this might explain my attention to detail and accuracy. I started making simple quilts many years ago but it was about 20 years ago, when I discovered pictorial appliqué, that quilting became an obsession. My quilts have received many awards from prestigious shows and have been featured in many publications in the USA and abroad. One of my quilts was named one of The Twentieth Century’s Best American Quilts. I was elevated to the Master Quilters Guild in 2003, one of only 19 people in the world. More about Zena Thorpe...
